Author Interview + Contest: Kathryn Miller Haines

Stopping in today is Kathryn Miller Haines, author of The Girl is Murder, to answer some questions and give you guys the chance to win a copy of her book, so let's get to it!

Iris is dumped into the present day. What’s the hardest part of that for her?

The fashion. She stuck out like a sore thumb in 1942, she doesn’t stand a chance in 2011.

What part of writing in 1942 was the hardest for you? The most fun?

Trying to pretend I didn’t know how things were going to turn out with regard to the war was definitely the hardest. The most fun? The lingo. I love slang (perhaps too much at times) and I love how teenagers of every era come up with their own language.

If you could pair Iris and Benny with any character from any book, who would you pick for her?

Probably Nancy Drew. I think both of them would get a kick out the real girl detective, and enjoy showing her up at every turn.

If you could live in a historical era for a while, which one would you want?

That’s tough. You’d think I’d say 1940s, right? But I don’t know if I could stomach witnessing the misogyny and racism firsthand. On the other hand, anytime earlier than the 20th century, and I’d have to deal with misogyny, racism, poor personal hygiene, and arcane ways of disposing of sewage, and I just don’t have the stomach for that either. So I guess…um…I’ll go with the ‘40s, provided that I can leave anytime I want.

Thank you, Kathryn, for stopping in!
